This blog has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Hundreds of reflections as I went on a personal journey of exploration. Here is a summary of my journey and reflections contained in this blog.
A companion of possibility
I live as a companion of possibility. I refuse to be governed by the voice of the status quo that says “it’ll never work”. My work is to help close the gap between what the world thinks is possible and what actually is – starting with my own life, then rippling out to family, community, and beyond. I write, convene, and experiment so that the spark in me might light something in you.
1) Purpose first, always
My anchor is purpose – my ikigai. It’s the reason I get out of bed and the filter for decisions. When I shifted from chasing wealth to creating impact, my energy, health and joy expanded. I measure success by lives touched and problems solved. Money is a by-product, not the point. Passion and curiosity are my engines. If I stay close to what I love and what the world needs, I stay alive to my best self.
Questions I return to:
- What would I do if nobody paid me?
- Where do my talents relieve real pain?
- What tiny move today honours that answer?
2) Dream audaciously
I choose moonshots. Big goals organise the best of my energy and attract allies that small plans never will. Declaring an “impossible” aim out loud is scary – and that’s the point. I practise blank-sheet thinking: if nothing existed yet, how would I design this from scratch? I expect eye-rolls at first. I’ve learned to smile, breathe, and keep going.
When fear pipes up, I thank it – then I jump anyway. I’d rather be in the arena, scuffed and learning, than comfortable on the sidelines.
3) Start now, start small
Bold visions move forward through small, simple actions. I break the big thing into the next tiny step and do it today. Pilots over proposals. Demos over decks. Ten scrappy experiments beat one immaculate plan. I believe in the aggregation of marginal gains: 1% improvements, compounded daily, change everything.
Rhythms I trust:
- Make one person’s life easier this week.
- Ship the imperfect version.
- Review, refine, repeat.
4) Break rules for good
When systems block progress, I create room outside them. I run “skunkworks” for society: small, independent teams with permission to try bold things quickly, cheaply, and without asking for approval. Intrinsic motivation – autonomy, mastery, purpose – outperforms bureaucracy every time.
Personally, this means living by design, not default. If a rule doesn’t serve the mission or my values, I rethink it. I’m not rebellious for its own sake; I’m faithful to outcomes that matter.
5) Change is a team sport
Transformation is collective. I look for my fellow “imaginal cells” and connect them. Coffee by coffee, project by project, we build trust, swap knowledge, and act together. I share openly so others can build on my work. I celebrate small wins to create momentum. My job is as much permission-giving as it is problem-solving: when I step up, others find it easier to step up too.
Practices I keep:
- Ask for help earlier than feels comfortable.
- Invite diverse voices into the room.
- Credit the village.
6) Choose a possibility mindset
What I feed my mind shapes my actions. I curate for signal over noise, solutions over doom. I’m realistic about problems and relentless about possibilities. I ask “How might we…?” and assume that somewhere, somehow, an answer exists – or can be invented.
I hold long-term optimism. Exponential technologies and human creativity can unlock abundance if we lean in with wisdom. Pessimism paralyses; grounded optimism mobilises.
7) Inside-out integrity
I work on the inner game first. If I’m not right with myself and my closest people, my outer work will wobble. I aim to be one person everywhere: aligned in what I think, say and do. Transparency is my friend; it nudges me toward better behaviour and deeper community.
I am a work in progress. I own my missteps, apologise quickly, and move on. I would rather be genuine and learning than polished and stuck.
Guiding checks:
- Does this honour my values?
- Would I be proud if my child watched me do this?
- Am I being kind – to others and to myself?
8) Savour the journey
I want a great day, every day – while doing meaningful work and being a loving husband, dad, friend, and neighbour. Mortality is my focusing tool: life is finite, so I prioritise what matters now. I keep a bucket list and I actively schedule adventures. Saying “yes” to life creates luck. Joy isn’t a reward for later; it’s fuel for the mission.
My dog once taught me half of this: delight in simple things, greet loved ones like they’ve been away for years, and remember that presence beats perfection. If I’m not enjoying the ride, I recalibrate.
My operating instructions
- Aim huge. Say the dream out loud.
- Act tiny. Do the smallest useful thing today.
- Design for impact. Measure what helps people.
- Work in the open. Share, invite, iterate.
- Protect the core. Health, love, integrity first.
- Stay playful. Curiosity and humour keep me brave.
- Keep going. Compounded effort beats occasional heroics.
Closing
This is how I try to live: purpose-led, audacious, experimental, collaborative, optimistic, honest, and joyfully human. I believe each of us holds far more possibility than we’ve been taught to expect. My job – and my joy – is to live that truth out loud and help others do the same. Let’s build the lives we want and the world we need, one bold vision and one small step at a time.
