“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks he becomes”
Gandhi

The Law of Attraction is simply this: we attract what we think about, good or bad.

Although New Age thinkers, quantum scientists, psychologists and spiritual leaders have been talking about the Law of Attraction for years, it grew in popularity when the film and book, The Secret, gained a lot of media attention from 2006 onwards. The Secret sold over 21 million copies in 44 languages, and was top of the New York Times bestseller list for 146 consecutive weeks. The principle behind The Secret is that the universe is ruled by the Law of Attraction.

The Law of Attraction is said to work by attracting into a person’s life the things and people that ‘match’ their own thoughts and feelings. Therefore, positive thinking and positive feeling can create life-changing results such as increased health, wealth, and happiness, and negative thinking manifests negative results.

It’s also based on interconnectedness. We all share a system/universe, so we can all have an impact, no matter how infinitesimally small, on everyone else. Much like the butterfly effect – whereby even a small incident can have unforeseen effects on the other side of the planet – everything we do, say or think has an impact to some extent on everything else around it.

I’m not going to turn all ‘New Age’ on you, but it is interesting to assess and investigate ideas from the whole spectrum of life. If The Law of Attraction is a long term approach that saves you time, and gets you further, faster – what have you got to lose by taking on board some of its principles?

The statement ‘what you see is what you get’ holds true for whatever you visualise and turn your attention to. Imagine receiving a warm reception from someone – and it will be more likely to happen. Expect a row, and you’ll get one.

This might be a combination of your attitude, thoughts and action, whereby the ‘vibes’ you give off affect other people’s attitudes towards you. The subconscious mind processes a huge amount more information that we realise, and the study of neuroscience is in its early stages. Our brains have more power than we yet understand, but there is a lot of evidence that your subconscious is able to communicate with and read other people. Micro-movements and micro-expressions that cannot be consciously registered do reveal what is on your mind. This is why whatever is on your mind is more likely to happen.

For example, if a person has in their mind the clear expectation of seeing new clients or money appearing, according to the Law of Attraction, the universe conspires to confirm that thought by producing new clients or money in reality; whereas someone who ‘decided’ to expect a loss could well make one. But as well as thinking, you are also required to take action. Businesses can fail through ‘thinking small’ or through operating in fear – by thinking of protecting what they have, for fear of losing it, they do not innovate, develop responsively or think bigger. The Law of Attraction suggests that when you really start believing in what you desire, focusing on it – and taking action, this will lead to it being realized.

Whether or not you believe in the power of an interconnected universe, there is plenty of scientific research to prove the effects of positive thinking – an essential part of attracting what you want. You can increase your magnetism by concentrating on powerful thinking every day. Spend 15 minutes every day thinking specifically about your goals, dreams and whatever you want from life. This is a technique that successful people utilise, which increases your chance of success. It’s called visualization.

Sports scientists have proven the value of visualisation by testing sportspeople who rehearse winning races and competitions. Athletes have practised visualisation techniques for many years, to prepare themselves mentally for races. Research proves that those who visualise well perform better. Record-breaking Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps talked about picturing himself winning every night before he went to sleep.

We also know that mental attitude affects our bodily responses. If you have ever done or seen a firewalk, you will know the amazing fact that positive thought can prevent feet walking across hot coals from getting burnt. Quantum physics is starting to explain this connection, adding more scientific credibility to the Law of Attraction and positive thinking.

This doesn’t mean you can sit at home all day and positively think your business into an overnight success story. Four steps to your business success (or any success) are to:

1. Dream big – and visualise.
If we actually have more control over our success than we realise, and are actively able to attract it to us – it would be a wasted opportunity not to think about it in huge terms. This is about creating a big mission. The bigger you think, the more likely you are to attract and inspire others to your cause, and make it happen.Visualization helps focus the mind to send out the clearest message, and prepare you for its realisation.

2. Plan how to get there.
Confront the reality of your current situation when you set your goals. Only then, can you appreciate what it will take to achieve them. Don’t aspire for any less, but understand what needs to be done to make those goals a reality, and then plan to make them happen.

3. Believe, and take action.
Believe that you will achieve what you want. To achieve your goals, take action. Belief and action go hand in hand. If you’re not moving towards your goal, you don’t really believe in it. You must move towards your goals with passion and enthusiasm. You cannot sit and simply visualise. Do all it takes. Being positive attracts the right kind of people to you, and that leads to business success. In business, have partners, employees, suppliers, customers, agents, distributors in place, with effective systems and processes.

4. Be open and adaptable.
Be receptive, and anything can happen. Believe in your goal, take steps to make it happen, and continue in a clear direction, and you are much more likely to attract opportunities to achieve whatever you want. The more flexible you are in responding to changes, the more successful you will be. Have a destination in mind, and remember there are many ways to get there. Enjoy the journey!

Use the same principles for other aspects of your life, too. There’s more to life than work, although if you do what you love, you never have to work – it’s all pleasure!

Take control your own thoughts, make incredible things happen, and use the Law of Attraction to attract greater success and freedom to your life.
