Last week we asked 100 people an audacious question: ‘How can you make Guernsey the best place to live on earth?’
This week, we are getting on with the job of making it happen, by 2020. We are starting this movement with no idea of how we are going to get there. We are starting this movement because we all have a stake in where we live, and we want to make a difference. We are starting this movement because it will be fun.
Right now, there are people inspired and empowered to make this happen. Groups of people are starting to solve problems, and creating better solutions for where we live. Connections are developing all over the world with people who want to help us to do this. In time, these actions will gain momentum and build into something incredible.
In our community, apathy and negativity are rife, and this has held us back for a long time. Yet we have this incredible canvas to paint on. This little island is literally one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth – but we have neglected trying to make it even more incredible. Until now.
Yesterday we launched a project to motivate everyone wanting to change things for the better to join us and make it happen. We are creating a community for the believers and the inspired. We are creating a community of people who want to contribute in all sorts of ways to the transformation of our nation.
There will be negativity. We will fail at times and be ridiculed. But while there is still a single person ill in hospital, a single child underperforming at school, a single person feeling isolated or lonely, a single piece of rubbish on our beaches, a single drop of oil being burned, a single piece of sewage being pumped into the sea – while these things still exist, we have failed in our job as a community.
As soon as communities realise that they do not have to wait for permission to improve where they live, we will start to see a revolution. When communities realise that they can come together with the rest of the world to solve their own problems, we will really start to see things happen.
Improving your country or town does not depend on endless debate and strategy documents. It depends on continual small actions, all contributing to creating something really big. The solution does not lie in fear, negativity and the status quo. It lies in hope, inspiration and action.
We can blame the council or the government for problems, and wait for someone else to take responsibility, or we can take action and do it ourselves. Community is Government 2.0. As soon as we realise this, we can break free from the shackles of bureaucracy and start contributing to the world around us. Then we will really create something wonderful.
So, I ask you – and the world – to get involved in this project, so we can set the standard for everyone. If we can get one small corner of the world to do something incredible, it raises the bar for all of us. It creates a model that can be replicated – and pretty soon, community empowerment will be a global movement.
You can be part of this. Reach out, through the internet. Find out what’s happening, then participate, and together we’ll learn what is possible within any global community. Come and see us, and get involved. Send us your ideas, connections and resources. We need you!
Join us. It’s time….
